A householdy meme

A householdy meme, appropriate because the magnetic_pole household is currently celebrating the acquisition of a huge, comfy couch! Folks, I have been sitting virtuously upright on a futon for twenty-odd years now, and I can't tell you how excited I am about lounging around on a plush couch with more than enough room for the two of us. Plus there's a giant ottoman for putting the feet up. Life is good.

1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now.
A bar of Dial, I think. Whatever was cheapest while I was shopping.

2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
Unfortunately, no. I walk about half a mile to get to the store, and so in terms of summer fruit I've been all about the light berries: raspberries, blueberries, strawberries.

3. Is there anything moldy in your refrigerator?
I hope not!

4. Are there any dirty dishes in your sink?
Sadly, yes. The better half insists on hand-washing certain items, and I'm less good about those than I am about putting things in the dishwasher.

5. What would you change about your living room?
More storage! We moved into a new apartment this spring, and while it's lovely and even a bit larger than the last in terms of square footage, it has only a pantry in the kitchen and a walk-in closet in the bedroom. There's nowhere to put coats, wrapping paper, and the twenty-odd boxes of stuff (photo albums, gifts, place mats, etc.) we still have sitting in the corner.

6. Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty?
Dirty, awaiting more dishy friends so I can run the darn thing.

7. Do you have a can of mushrooms in your pantry?
Hm. I should in case of mushroom emergencies. I have two packages of fresh mushroom in the fridge (baby bella and white) and a container of dried shiitakes in the pantry.

8. White or wheat bread?
Wheat.

9. What is on top of your refrigerator?
A microwave (our old microwave; the new place came with one over the stove already). A buffet server because the better half really, really enjoys throwing parties.

10. What colour is your sofa?
SOFA!!!! We have a brand-new queen-sized sleeper sofa in a nice, textured coffee-with-milk chocolately brown that is just so comfortable. I've been sitting awkwardly upright on a futon since my college days, and I am so, so happy about this purchase.

11. What colour or design is on your shower curtain?
White, with some green leaves.

12. How many plants are in your home?
Four: two orchids that were housewarming gifts, a tiny little thing that was a gift from a student last spring, and a small plant the last owner left us. (No green thumbs in this house, but we try.)

13. How many candles are in your home?
Hm. Two or three?

14. Is your bed made right now?
Yes.

15. Electric or standard can opener?
Standard.

16. Comet or Soft Scrub?
At the moment, soft scrub.

17. Is your closet organized?
As organized as I can make it.

18. What colour is the flashlight that you use the most?
We really should have a flash light for emergencies. Hm. *mental note*

19. What kinds of things are in your junk drawer?
No junk drawers. All the drawers are filled, and the junk is still in twenty-odd boxes in the corner of the living room.

20. Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home.
Glass. We've had these great mason jars for years. They came with salsa in them originally.

21. Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now?
I do! Peach.

22. If you have a garage, is it cluttered?
No garage. One bedroom apartment.

23. Curtains or blinds?
Neither, actually.

24. How many pillows do you sleep with?
One.

25. Do you sleep with any lights on at night?
No need--it's fairly light in this part of the city.

26. How many ceiling fans are in your home?
None.

27. How often do you vacuum?
Not often enough.

28. Standard toothbrush or electric?
Standard.

29. What colour is your toothbrush?
Green.

30. Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch?
In the hallway in front of our door, you mean? No.

31. What is in your oven right now?
Nothing. My goal is to ignore the oven until October or so. Right everything's a stir fry or going in the toaster oven.

32. Is your microwave clean or dirty?
Clean.

33. Is there anything under your bed?
Quite a bit. Our winter clothes, a suitcase, and half a dozen travel bags.

34. Chore you hate doing the most?
Vacuuming? It's the one I put off the most.

35. What retro items are in your home?
We don't really have self-consciously "retro" items--when we need new things, we tend to buy new or trade or borrow from others. The oldest items in the house right now are all from 1994, when the better half and I finished college--a boom box complete with tape deck, a rice cooker, a toaster oven, a desk lamp, a futon (hopefully a former student will take this, now that we have the couch), and a cheap glass-top dining table and chairs that have lasted so well over the years I'm reluctant to give them up. We've also got a clock-radio and a pair of jogging shorts from 1990 and a hairbrush from 1977 (!).

36. Do you have a separate room that you use as an office?
Nope. I have my desk in a corner of the bedroom.

37. If you have a yard, who mows it?
No yard.

38. Is there anything on your kitchen floor right now?
Apart from the trash can and recycling bin? No.

39. How many mirrors are in your home?
Two: one above the sink in the bathroom, and one, full-length, in the bedroom. This second mirror was also left by the last owner. It has the magical power of making me look thinner than I am (I'm a slightly overweight person from a very overweight family; issues there, I know).

40. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?
*sigh* Yes. Not much, but just in case.

41. What colour are your walls?
The living-dining room is a very pale green with some sage-green accent walls (which we painted on moving in), the kitchen and bathroom are the original beige, and the bedroom is a very trendy grey (left over from the last owner).

42. Which rooms in your house have wallpaper?
None.

43. Do you have a peephole in your front door?
Yes.

44. Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home?
No.

45. What does your home smell like right now?
Not much, I hope?

46. Fave candle scent?
Odd as this sounds, I don't really like scents.

47. What kind of pickles (if any) are in your refrigerator right now?
Just relish.

48. Who are in the pictures you display?
Me and the better half; the better half, the better half (these two are from posters from performances she gave a few years ago); me, the better half, and our two nephews; and me and the better half no fewer than ten times each in a really spectacular composite photo an artist friend made for us. (He shot several dozen photos of us standing in one of our favorite cityscapes and knitted them together into a single composition. It's one of my favorite things in the house.)

49. What colour is your favourite bible?
No Bibles in this house.

50. Do you have plenty of cabinet space in your kitchen?
Not quite enough.

51. Ever been on your roof?
No.

52. Do you own a stereo?
A boom box with radio, CD player, and cassette tape--my college graduation gift from my parents in the mid 1990s. It gets daily use and just keeps going.

53. How many TVs do you have?
None.

54. How many house phones?
None.

55. Do you have a housekeeper?
No.

56. What style do you decorate in?
"Tidy" and "book-filled."

57. Do you like solid colours in furniture or prints?
Solids.

58. Is there a smoke detector in your home?
Yes. Also, a sprinkler system, since we're in an apartment building with more than 100 units.

59. In case of fire, what are the items you would grab if you only could make one quick trip?
So much is replaceable, you know? I suppose the letters the better half and I wrote to each other at the very beginning of our relationship, when we were long distance.

60. Do you know how to work your electrical box?
Sadly, no.

61. What temperature in your home is most comfortable to you?
Ideally, 70-75F/21-24C. But we set the thermostat at 60/16 in the winter and 79 or 80/26 in the summer.

Congratulations! 20 years is a very long time to use a futon as a substitute couch. I hope you enjoy your new sofa tremendously! :D

Thanks, S. We've been talking about this couch for *years* and are so happy with it. (In fact, I'm typing to you from it right now.) Looking forward to your meme in a moment! M.

My two fave answers:

Odd as this sounds, I don't really like scents. and No Bibles in this house.

I am sensitive to strong scents and it seems like it's getting worse, too. I feel like I can't breathe when I walk in somewhere like Yankee Candle. And while we own Bibles it's really more because we're book people.

Gah! Absolutely agreed on Yankee Candle. (And Bed Bath and Beyond--does your local branch smell as bad as mine? I can never figure out what they're trying to do.) Scents don't bring me any joy--they just seem like a nuisance. And, probably not coincidentally, I seem to be able to smell bad things from a mile away.

Ah, the things about me you're delighted to learn. :)

True, Bibles (and other religious texts) are a key part of a library! M.

How lovely to read everyone's answers - I'm so glad people took up the meme.

Your colour scheme sounds great, and I love your decoration style. Nothing beats 'book-filled'.

The better half insists on hand-washing certain items. We should get our better halves together. They can swop handwash stories while we stack the dishwasher (and perhaps spend some quality time checking out the bookshelves).

Thanks for getting me going with this meme!

Re: "book-filled," I actually had to promise the better half that we'd leave one wall of the living room book-free this time around so she could put up some decorations--I think she's tiring of my approach. (I don't have that many books, several hundred, almost all academic--your library's probably much more interesting than mine--but our apartments have been small.)

There's a part of me that thinks "If you don't like putting it in the dishwasher, you're welcome to hand-wash it yourself"...but I'm trying not to be churlish. :( M.

You're a much better woman than I am. Lord S does 95% of the hand-washing, for exactly that reason.

Thanks! We're feeling very lucky about the apartment right now--we'd spent about eight months looking at very small, dark, and/or ground-floor/basement units (meaning we were at the very lowest end of the market for one-bedrooms in our neighborhood), and this one is just lovely. But I'm going to miss going to look at other people's apartments! I just love seeing how other people live, even through the filter of memes or open-houses. M.

Retro items??? Does that include my grandparents furniture?
What color is my favorite bible?? Um... yeah.
How do you work an electrical box?? Switches. On. Off. Is there more?
What style do I decorate in?? In slovenly a style?
And no questions about pets??

Weird questions, some of them....

And congrats on the new sofa!!

Hee! There are a lot of odd questions here, but I figured once I started thinking about it too much (and editing), I might not be able to stop. I say try it yourself and substitute in some pet questions!

And thank you on the sofa. We've been talking about it and planning the purchase for ages, so it's been A Big Deal in the magnetic_pole household. We're thinking about featuring it in our new year's card this year. :) M.

Do you think that anyone answer's yes to #50? I've never had enough cabinet space!

This was a cool meme. I feel like I know a lot more about you!

Fun, isn't it? Despite the odd and/or weirdly culturally specific questions. There's a text box right there, if you're in the mood...

You're absolutely right about cabinet space, by the way. Our last apartment had more cabinet space than we'd ever had before, and we *still* managed to fill it--with the same dishware and cookware we'd had in the three previous, smaller kitchens! M.

I will definitely do this one!

Yeah, it does seem a bit culturally specific, now that I think about it.

The iced tea, the porches, and the favorite Bibles are what made me think southern US, but who knows! M.

Very true. Here in Taos we all have porches (that we call portals) and most of us drink iced tea, but the bible part was a little... odd.

The couch sounds wonderful! We now have a couch and an ottoman but it's in the downstairs living room; the one up here still has the old futon (which is also what I'm used to now). We're hoping we can get something comfier soon!

Ahhh yeah I'm figuring out storage too. Looks like once I have a full look at what I'll need to store (I'm still unpacking), I'll have to go out and grab some nice-looking containers that keep it accessible.

Great answers!

There's an art to storage--leaning how much to keep, what to pack away, how to find bins and boxes and furniture to store things in a way that allows you to access them easily, etc. I haven't learned any of it yet!

Thanks for reading through, K! I continue to enjoy your posts about settling into the new place. Homes are fascinating to me... M.

I absolutely agree: storage is an art! A fine one to have, too. I'm learning quite a bit as I go along, particularly I'm the sort of person who both likes to keep things that are precious (which may be odd things) and also likes to have a place for everything. At the moment I'm relying on plastic tubs more than I'd like but I'll remedy that once my everyday living situation is all organised and set out correctly.

Thank you! (: Homes are fascinating to me as well; I've loved reading the household memes. I've saved a copy so I can do one later--hopefully with pictures/video.

Thanks for sharing this; I am so nosy about how other people live and I find this sort of thing absolutely fascinating.

I just love seeing/hearing about other people's living situations. When we bought the condo this spring I was disappointed the house hunting would come to an end, actually.

I should take a photo of the couch, hm? It's been a big deal in the magnetic_pole household--may go on our new year's card. :)

Thanks for reading through! M.
